Hulu is a website in which one can watch any number of TV shows online. The idea of watching your favorite TV shows when is most convenient for you started with TIVO or DVR. These recorder boxes are in almost every home now adays and one doesn’t think much of it. Now one can watch their favorite TV show whenever and wherever there is access to a computer, or even an IPhone or other smartphone. Hulu has changed the way that american television is seen throughout the world. People in other countries no longer have to wait a year or more to see their american TV shows, they can watch them all online at the exact moment that Americans are able to watch them. Hulu’s latest scandal is that TV networks are having difficultly watching TV ratings because people are watching them online at a convienient time for them and not when they air on TV. Is the idea of convenience for viewers more important than TV station ratings?

After eighteen years, Dave Matthews Band is still playing music all around the world, although some of their members have changed. Their most recent album to be released is Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King. The Rolling Stones called this DMB’s heaviest album yet. The following afternoon everyone is in full race mode as we battle a “near by” boat. Near by being a few miles away, however, in such a large ocean a few miles is nothing for a boat going 25knots. Our eyes are focused only on the sail trim and navigation numbers. The food bowl sitting on the bench has hardly been touched due to my fathers’ intent to focus on sailing; one can eat later.

The prize? Just look at the beautiful finish line in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. Crisp blue water, peaks of rocky hardened lava and sand white beaches. As the Hula Girl crew pulls into the bay we realize we have done it, we have sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii. All the bonding along the way we are a tight nit family of eight. After eating freeze-dried food for nine days we are graciously welcoming the fresh fruit bowls and Mahi Tias.  This was truly an experience to remember, pushing myself through the first few days of rough cold San Francisco water and no sleep for a few days, to warm breeze and clear ocean water.

Besides the obvious differences in color and actors the two different versions of the film Magnificent Obsession are just that, different.

The 1935 original version of Magnificent Obsession, we immediately meet the family; the daughter Joyce and the step mom Helen. The two appear to be good friends excited for the weekend festivities. The director of the first film focuses on Dr. Phillips family and in the second film the director focus on the one person that broke the family apart. In the opening scene of the remake done in 1954, we are introduced to the antagonist in the film. Due to Bob Merrick’s reckless fast-pace lifestyle he is inadvertently responsible for Dr. Phillips death. Each director had his own personal reason for which characters they felt should be introduced first to set the scene with the audience.

Characters and order of appearance aside, the two opening scenes differ in technology as well. The opening scene of the original has simple credit displays. It appears as though a piece of paper with the list of characters has been pulled up in front of the screen. In the 1954 remake the credits demonstrate a bit more artistic flare. They consist of a yellow background and each credit flows in and out to the next one. The 1935 film has music playing as the short list of credits are being displayed, however the technology in which the music was received by the audience was much different than that of the second film. In the twenty years between the films the audio and picture quality have improved dramatically.

The artistic flare was carried out in the entire opening scene of the 1954 film. The camera angles as Bob Merrick was speeding around the lake in his boat were much more than just a head on shot. The water that splashes onto the camera as the boat zooms by, from the headshots to the lake shots. In the original film, the technology allowed the director to only do head on shots of Joyce waving to Helen from the boat, with a simple boat horn playing in the background. As Joyce walked down the ramp to meet Helen the camera was right in front as if she were walking to the camera.

Although the style in the original film was simplistic it was all that the audience knew at that point in history. The remake of the film will never portray the same thing that the director of the original film intended.
